How does the hologram work on your phone?

The light emitted by the phone screen simultaneously reflects and refracts on the four faces of the pyramid, creating the illusion of an image floating inside it.

The Bodianos scrofa (dogfish) is endemic to Macaronesia (Madeira, Azores, and Canary Islands).

This species is extremely important for controlling the population of sea urchins, which are the basis of its diet. For this reason, fishing for dogfish has been prohibited in the waters of the Autonomous Region of Madeira since August 1, 2022.

The Invention of Holography

Holography was created in 1948 by Hungarian scientist Dennis Gabor to improve the quality of images produced by electron microscopes. The invention of this technique was so significant that it earned him a Nobel Prize in Physics.

Today, biologists greatly benefit from this technology by using portable holographic electron microscopes to observe the behaviour of the tiny organisms that make up marine plankton in their natural environment.

Everyday Application

Some cars already project GPS information, speed, and other data onto the windshield to make it easier for the driver to see. These features are inspired by holography.

Holograms in Concerts

Holographic concerts have also allowed fans of some artists who have passed away, such as António Variações and Whitney Houston, to see their idols again. The principle behind this is simple: 2D images projected onto very thin screens (almost invisible to the audience) interact with the stage and musicians, creating the illusion of a three-dimensional hologram.
